After taking a look at what was working for me, I came up with what I refer to as the 5 pronged approach to building your online empire. I will go into detail about each of these five prongs later, but first I want to tell you more about getting started online.

First you will need to choose a niche, or an area of specialization. This usually comes from what you have experience in and are passionate about. On the internet you can work in almost any area that you choose.

The first of my 5 prongs is blogging. You blog is your home on the internet, so make sure you are letting people know who you are and what you do. The next prong is article marketing. Write articles regularly and submit them to Ezine Articles, the largest article directory on the internet. This will help people to find you online.

The third prong is social networking on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. These sites have made it possible for newbies to the internet to get started very quickly. The fourth prong is teleseminars and internet radio. Allow people to hear you speak on the topics that you are most knowledgeable about.

All four of these prongs support the fifth prong, which is affiliate marketing. You only make money online when someone buys something. Promoting affiliate products and services is the best way to get started when you do not have a product of your own. You will want to continue promoting other people's products when you see how much money you can make.

One way to manage your time more effectively is to delegate work to others on your staff or to contract workers you hire for specific projects. How often I hear such comments as, "It takes too much time to delegate." "If I delegate the work there is no guarantee that the work will be done properly. It is just easier to do it myself." "No one can do this as well as I can." If others who have a lower hourly rate can do the work while you focus on the work only you can do, your cash flow will be better because you can do more of the work that only you can do.

1. Be specific about what you want done. Be clear as to the purpose of the delegated work and what kind of results you expect. Take the time to answer the person's questions. This takes less time than redoing work.

2. Set a realistic deadline for the delegated work and make sure that this is workable for the person to whom you are delegating the work.

3. Give the person the information he/she will need and point them toward other resources he/she may use to complete the work

4. Be available for questions and require periodic progress reports.

5. If you are delegating because you have so much to do that you do not have time to give explicit instructions, be sure to delegate to a member of your team or a contract worker who can do the work with a minimum of direction. Perhaps they have done this job before or they have had experience with similar projects.

6. Once you delegate to someone who is well equipped to handle the task, allow the person space to be imaginative in his/her approach and to take the initiative to do something differently or do it in a bigger way (as long as you get the results you are looking for!).

7. If you want to use the delegation of the task (problem) as a way to develop a member of your staff or a contract worker, leave time in your schedule to provide enough detail as to how to go about getting the task done as is necessary for that particular person. (Developing a team member means eventually you will not have to give as much direction.)

8. Have a system to report back to you so that you get feedback without being constantly interrupted during your day. Have a list of critical dates so that you get the feedback regularly.

9. Keep a log of all the projects you delegate and their status. Update the log as you get feedback.

10. Give credit and praise for the successful completion of the task or solution of the problem.

So it's no secret that we are in a recession. Our economy is in pretty bad shape. This is not the first time we've been in a recession, and most likely not the last. The fact is that we are in one right now. So you ask yourself how are you going to get through it? How are you going to get through the tough times? First of all, you can't hide from it. Hiding from it and covering yourself in a shell is only going to make things worse. So you're probably asking yourself how you are going to survive on top through a recession. You see so many bad things happening that it just seems like something that can't be done. Well, you're wrong.

Recessions are not actually all as bad as people think. They can actually be good in some ways. If people take advantage of what is actually going on, they can actually take this time to rebuild. They can either work on rebuilding their business, their careers, or even themselves. This is the time to build success for yourself. You will never get anywhere if you wait for something to happen. This is the time where you have to take action yourself. Make something happen. Once you have come up with what you want to improve on and rebuild, make a goal for yourself. That is why they have issued the stimulus package; the government wants people to spend. On the other hand, spend wisely, and make sure your bills are paid. If you can, look for side activities to make your money grow. There are ways to grow your money during these times, you just have to look for the opportunities presented. During the Great Depression, America had the most millionaires created during that time period. That being said, there is a way to build your money.

Go about things with a relaxed state. Observe what is going on in the world. The worst thing you can do to yourself is panic with the rest of the world. Panicking will only bring you down. You will not succeed during these times if you are in constant panic. Put yourself in a place where you are on the high ground. This puts you in a position to do great things. While you are doing great things, you are able to help other people do great things as well. When you help other people, other people reach out to help you as well.

Finally, use this time to meet new people as well. Networking is so important in the world today. Who you know is very important. Meeting new people is how opportunities are presented. Everybody knows somebody. If you network correctly, you will meet new connections and doors will open. Also use this time to strengthen prior relationships with people. All relationships are important. The world revolves around networking. Make good impressions on people, for your first impression is the one that always lasts in someone's mind.

People often ask me, "What's the most important piece of advice you would give to entrepreneurs starting a business or growing an existing business?" My response is always the same: take action every single day.

One of my little tricks that I did when my business was new is that I created a Marketing 100 List. I came up with 100 ways that I could market, anything I could think of I wrote it on that list.

Some of the ideas were absolutely ridiculous. Some of them were to stand on the street corner and scream at people. Some of them were great ideas like go to an expo, go to a Chamber meeting this week, or send an email to all of my friends that I'm looking for speaking gigs. Whatever it is, I put it on that list.

That list has had several incarnations and it's worn. I've had this one for about a year. I pull it out once a week or once every couple of weeks and I constantly refer to it. There are things on there that I go, "Oh my gosh! I forgot I thought of that!"

I really encourage you to create a Marketing 100 list with 100 ideas. I'm not asking you how good they are, I'm not asking you to judge them, I'm just asking you to get them on paper so that when you have a day when you go, "I don't know what I can do today. I don't possibly know what I could do today," you can take that list and really run with it.

That's my little secret. It sounds like a really simple idea and technique, but I'm telling you that it has saved me more times than you can imagine and it never allows me to have the excuse of, "I don't know what I can do today," because I can always pull out my list and keep the momentum going in my business.

People want to know how in the world North Korea has kept on tickin' for so long. There was no question in some people's minds that this nation would fall when its first leader died. In fact, it remained, and did some pretty amazing things technologically (while its people died by the 10's of thousands from starvation). It was during this period (mid 90's on) that North Korea entered the nuclear club. How can this be?

There is an ultimate answer, involving the perfect will and timing of God, and/or prayerlessness of God's people, and/or the powers of darkness and all the rest, but today I'm looking at more surface realities (with some help from Jasper Becker). What factors have kept the Red Korean Machine rolling down the road, if only in low gear?

The government's continued "personal" power over the Korean people. It forces them to do its will. And its will is that North Korea survive... the Communist way.

The NK government bluffs its neighbors. They thought it was about to attack them if they caused NK any trouble. Would they have?

Foreign aid. Yes, this empire is being propped up by well-meaning nations. Aid that was given was passed on to party faithful and the government-chosen elite, producing even more loyalty from them.

China stopped refugees from getting too far. So many would have been long gone from the nightmare if China had not intervened, and sent many of them back to a certain death either by execution or famine or disease.

Becker compares North Korea to a huge concentration camp in which the inmates are slowly being worked to death. When certain portions of the population of the "camp" are no longer necessary they are allowed to die. Less and less aid is sent to them. They grow weak, unable to rise in rebellion. They perish.

Still there are citizens who are wise to what is coming, and believe it or not, while they are strong, they do rebel. There are strikes. Takeovers of buildings. Even murders of government officials. The government fights back, though, with the wrath at their disposal. Public "trials". Public executions. At one time it demanded that the execution of all criminals was to take place within 3 months.

During reprisals, killings become more and more gruesome. Prisoners tied to a stake while relatives are forced to light the fire (as in Medieval Romanism). Stoned to death. Bayoneted to death. And crimes become more and more petty, to be sure everyone who needs to be punished is covered. Stealing 2 pounds of maize. Stealing a couple of eggs. Killing a cow. It's all state property, so you've committed a crime against the state. You die.

We continue to be aghast at just how low a society can be brought when Jesus is not allowed in. It's hard to "think positive" , but we must continue to pray. Without prayer, what seems tragic is more like hopeless. President Obama and his little merry men (and women) diplomatic team promised us change, but exactly what kind of change? That's the question. Are they going to cave into all these nations challenging our authority like Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, and North Korea? Well, those nations certainly believe so, and they see Joe Biden as a weak man, Iran will not stop making nuclear weapons or supporting proxy terrorist organizations, and North Korea has resumed? Hugo Chavez, Putin, Kim Jong Il and the President of Iran will never respect a woman like Hilary Clinton. While, I just bet the Obama Administration gets us into a World War due to their naivety.

And all this is going on as political grandstanding and saber rattling continues with regards to missile defense shields and the impending show down with Iran. Meanwhile Russia says it wants to talk with President Obama, and Iran thinks he will cave (they are probably right). After all, it was Joe Biden during the election who stated that Israel is going to have to get used to a nuclear Iran?

And you know that the world media will change fast, so President Obama has to play this right the first time. Name one president that has ever done everything right their first year in office? Impossible, and even if you did, the media can plan a created reality other than you intended.

Let's hope the basketball player can score some three pointers and put some quick points on the board. Of course, this means he'll have to remain engaged in the game rather than voting "present" because it's the big time now, this is the playoffs.

Still, while everyone is looking away, I can see some major conflicts brewing on North Pole vicinity oil reserves as everyone tries to stake their claims. It's all connected this chess board has a life of its own in a 3D sort of way. And quite frankly I have zero faith personally in the Obama Administration and if I were another world leader, you bet I'd try my luck, as you'd have nothing to lose and they know it.

North Korea is located in the northern half of Korean Peninsula. It shares its borders with China, Russia, South Korea and Japan. Large number of attractions and temperate climate are successful enough to attract myriad of tourists every year. Its principal cities, as per the map of North Korea, are also not lagging behind in offering comfort and catering to their needs.

Some main cities of North Korea:

• Pyongyang- it is the largest and the capital city of North Korea. It is designed with imposing monuments, monolithic building and wide avenues in addition of some notable landmarks such as the Arch of triumph, Juche Tower, Pyongyang TV tower, Kumsusan Memorial Palace etc...

• Namp'o- it is a city and seaport, which is designated as 'Special City' of North Korea. It also plays an important role in country's economy as it is an important steel and fiber industry center.

South Korea, the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, is known as the 'Land of Morning calm'. Bordered by China, Japan and North Korea, it is a major economic power and one of the wealthiest countries in Asia. Some of the principal cities, as shown in a map of South Korea are:

• Seoul- it is a major global city and the capital of South Korea. Not only this, but it is also the leading international financial centre and second largest metropolitan city in the world. Some of the major modern landmarks of the city are the world Trade center, Korea Finance Building, 63 Buildings and N Seoul Tower.

• Incheon- it is a major seaport on the west coast of South Korea, near Seoul. It is regarded as a part of Seoul metropolitan area due to its close proximity to the capital and the fact that Incheon Subway and Seoul metropolitan Subway system are linked.

• Kwangju- it is the sixth largest city in South Korea and is designated as one of the metropolitan cities. The city is famous for its rich and diverse cuisine.

It looks as if our President is learning the hard way that international affairs and crises do not simply go away when you ignore them. Now, North Korea is challenging the international community and in direct defiance of the United States' strong suggestion that they abandon their nuclear weapons manufacturing and testing. North Korea has now detonated two nuclear weapons and conducted several ICBM - Intercontinental Ballistic Missile tests.

For all the criticizing of the Bush Administration, President Obama has not been able to turn the tide on any of the international crisis. In fact, he's made virtually no difference. Although some could argue that every single enemy or quasi hostile nation to the US has tested him. Nations like Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, and even Russia. They will continue to do so unless he makes a stand to do something about it.

North Korea is really causing problems in the world with their nuclear weapons test and by us standing by and doing nothing, it gives more power to Iran to do the same, and they will. Then these nations will use this new found power to challenge us and other nations. This causes problems for the regions and all of our allies, they are worried.

North Korea is surrounded by US Allies, some of our closest allies in fact; South Korea, Japan, and our biggest trading partner China. We can no longer sit around and negotiate, that has not worked before and will not work in the future. The more we are challenged by North Korea, the power and leverage it gives to Iran in their nuclear weapons exploits. Please consider all this.

North Korea - Holiday in a Secret State

First of all, and the question that many people ask me when I tell them about a trip I made back in '05: Why the hell did you go to North Korea?! The answer is simple: I like to do things a little differently. Most people think a great holiday is sitting on a beach in Thailand for a week, burning themselves and getting hammered every night, waking up around midday etc. I would much prefer to see places and do things so that when I come back from my holiday I've got a feeling of accomplishment. I wasn't really looking at holiday destinations when I was browsing the BBC news website and a story about DPRK's nuclear ambitions when I saw a link entitled, Holidays in North Korea. In that article I read about a company called Koryo Tours and from then my interest rose hugely. This company, run out of a Beijing office by 2 British guys, arranged visas and did regular tours to DPRK throughout the year, during which you had the chance of visiting and seeing things most of the world will never see. This was right up my street, and I exchanged a bunch of emails with one of the guys, getting more information on the trips and what was possible (unfortunately no diving was allowed, by I did ask and they did enquire!). In the end, I settled for a 6-day May Day Stadium tour of the country, flying into Pyongyang and coming back by train to Beijing. Not only would this tour include seeing some spectacular and rare sights, but there was also the prospect of going to see the World Cup Qualifying match between DPRK and Japan, to be played at the country's May Day Stadium. This is the biggest stadium in the world, seating over 150,000 people. To put it into perspective a little, it is over twice the size of the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.

I did a little research about the country, and although information is fairly limited, I managed to pick up an excellent travel guide and DVD documentary about the country. First of all, the Bradt Travel Guide to North Korea was an excellent resource, both before my trip and during my travels in DPRK. It includes a lot practical travel information and covers almost every area of DPRK that you might want to visit. If you ever manage to go there, this book would be highly recommended. Through Koryo Tours, I also managed to get my hands on a copy of a BBC documentary called A State Of Mind. This is a fascinating documentary, and is one of the best DVDs I have ever bought. It revolves around 2 girls who are preparing for the Mass Games in DPRK. More about these later, but in summary the Mass Games is a huge choreographed gymnastics spectacle involving thousands of gymnasts. In simple terms, it makes the Olympic opening ceremony look like a primary school festival. I will talk a little about this later, but will leave you with a photo of the event itself (unfortunately not mine, I didn't have chance to see it on my visit as it is usually held in April/May and August/September).

As for currency, we were asked to bring anything, although Euros would be preferred. US$ were accepted, but if you paid for things in Euros you would get a much better price for things. In DPRK they have their own currency, although foreigners are strictly not supposed to have it for some reason. The money situation is a little strange at the best of times, and sometimes downright bizarre. Firstly, very few places will have change, so you should take small denomination notes of your money. Indeed, a number of places will have no money at all! For example, one night we were sat at the bar in our hotel having a beer or two after a hard day of sightseeing. I was about to pay the tab and head off to bed as I was feeling a little weary so I went to the bar with my bill (around 7 Euros) and I gave her a 10 Euro note. I sat around for 5 minutes or so waiting for my change, and then the waitress came back to me, said "No change" and handed me another beer! What an ingenious way of doing things: we won't give you change, but we'll just give you more of what you've been drinking. I'd have been paralytic if I'd have only had a 50 Euro note to hand! We were also asked to bring small gifts for the guides we would meet, as they would be more appreciated than money. So, as advised, I bought some hand cream for any female guides I would meet (Nivea is favoured by them, if my memory serves me correctly), and some cigarettes and chocolate for the men (the more nicotine, the better).

We had a brief meeting in Beijing 2 days before we travelled, to sort out our passport visas and be given a few guidelines for DPRK. It was all fairly routine stuff (be respectful, ask before taking photos etc) but it had to be said because if not then someone would always go too far. The thing is, in DPRK the foreigner wouldn't get into much trouble about that, but their tour guide would be severely reprimanded and the company may not get as much chance to tour the country. We were especially told to be respectful and nice to the main guides, because if they like the group then you might see things that not every tour group gets to see. We were also told that, disappointingly, the World Cup Qualifying game between DPRK & Japan had been moved to a neutral location (Thailand) because of crowd trouble in a previous game. Some people were unhappy with this, but there really was nothing we could do. We could complain and be grumpy through the entire trip, or we could make the most of what we would see. Even though the Kumsusan Memorial Palace of Kim Il Sung could not be visited due to renovations, I still knew this would be an unforgettable journey. With that in mind, 2 days later we boarded the twice-weekly Beijing-Pyongyang flight, courtesy of Air Koryo.

Now, when you travel somewhere, there are certain signs that your trip is going to be an eventful one. Being on an flight to one of the most secretive countries in the world, sat in between a guy from the World Food Programme an an Ethiopian arms dealer is one such sign! But this was the situation in which I found myself, sat in this plane straight out of the 70s. But to their credit, both guys were very friendly, although the Ethiopian did bend the truth slightly, saying he was visiting DPRK on holiday. It was only later I found out he travels there almost every month, and always says to people he's going on holiday. I wonder how big the North Korean tourism business is in Ethiopia. The mind boggles. There was also a Spanish guy on the flight in a communist-style suit with a big medal, who told us he was connected to the DPRK government. We were told by one of the tour company guys to steer clear though, so I kept my distance.

The first thing you see when you get off the plane in Pyongyang is a huge picture of Kim Il Sung on the roof of the airport. As I looked back at the plane, I noticed the air crews pouring water on the smoking plane tyres! Think someone might have landed a little too quickly! Other than that, the flight was great. Everyone was slightly confused as to why the landing gear was lowered at about 20,000ft, but who are we to tell the pilot what to do! In the airport, bags were collected and items such as MP3 players and mobile phones were handed in to customs officials as they are not allowed in the country. Contrary to popular opinion though, camera and video cameras were fine to bring in.

The guides introduced themselves to us, and our main guide was a woman with perfect English, called Mrs Lee. She was an awesome guide... very friendly and knowledgeable about everything. She was one of the government-appointed guides, but talked about everything with the minimum of bias and the highest amount of information. She'd obviously met quite a few tour groups, and was full of questions about our families and what we did in our home countries. A few people brought photos of our photos and lives from home, and it was a nice feeling to introduce them to her. There were actually 2 guides appointed to our tour group of 20 people. There were 2 reasons for this I think, neither of which was that they could spy on us better! Firstly, the group was quite big and they wanted to manage everyone in the best way. The second reason could be (and I hasten to add that I don't know this for sure) that the 2 guides could censor each other. If there was only one, then it is possible that they could say something negative about the country or its politics; with 2 people there is always someone else listening. We also had a cameraman walking around with our group, who would make a VCD of our trip that we could purchase at the end of our trip. That was a nifty little idea, and I said I would definitely like a copy of that.

One of the first things that hit me as we entered Pyongyang on our tour bus was how clean it was. There were lots of people, both adults & children, who were pulling up weeds along the streets and paths by hand. Technologically-advanced, this city is not, but it looked friendly enough so far. None of the military parades of huge missiles evident so far, that you usually see in the western media. Our first stop on the tour was Fountain Park. This was a wide open space (Pyongyang has a lot of these) with many very large water fountains, along with some beautiful statues of women dancing. There were a few kids walking around and we managed to get some friendly acknowledgements from them by smiling and waving. The power of a smile, even in the so-called Axis of Evil, is immense. A small group of girls were walking across the park and they came over. One of the girls proceeded to give us a 2-minute jamming session on her guitar-like thing (can you tell I don't play music?!) while her friends looked on. As advised, we asked for permission to take some photos of the girls and the surroundings, and then started snapping away. To be honest, there were not the restrictions on taking photos that you might expect. Of course, nobody tried to take photos of military installations or personnel, but whenever we asked to take shots, the answer was always "Yes".

From the park, we headed to our next stop (and the most important stop on the tour): the bronze statue of Kim Il Sung at Mansudae. For those of you unfamiliar with DPRK's history & politics, Kim Il Sung was the leader of the country from 1948 (when the country was founded) until his death in 1994. Following his death, there were 3 years of official mourning. This period of Kim Il Sung statue at Mansudaetime with Kim Il Sung's mourning, coupled with bad harvests and declining living conditions, became known as the Arduous March. The statue was said by our guide to weigh as much as all the hearts of the Korean people. Note that the word "Korean" was used to signify both Koreas. In DPRK they still say that Korea is one country, and that they will reunify in time. Around the statue are 2 other monuments, both depicting people fighting in the Korean War (called in DPRK The Victorious Fatherland Liberation War) from 1950 to 1953. As the statue, a few of us bought flowers and laid them at the front of the statue, before walking back and paying our respects by bowing. This was the first occasion I realised that some people might not be suited to a trip to DPRK. You have to go through the bowing to Kim Il Sung, and just accept it, even if you don't approve of the leadership of the country. It is all about showing respect and politeness for a foreign country in which you are a rare guest. It's a similar deal with the stories that you are told. Sometimes they seem far fetched, the guides know they sound far fetched, you know they do, and the guides know that you know. But the key is just to play along with it, take it in with interest and use your head a little. A couple on our tour tried to ask questions that were pushy or embarrassing, and all that did was make the guide flustered and upset at us. Nobody benefited and, most likely, everyone lost out. So if you do consider a trip to this fascinating country, bear that in mind.

The hotel we stayed at was the Yanggakdo Hotel in central Pyongyang. If you go to DPRK, you will most likely either stay here or in the Koryo Hotel. This hotel is excellent and is on its own island! It has a 9-hole golf course, cinema, football stadium, casino, rotating restaurant at the top of the hotel (this is a recurring theme), and pretty much everything else you could want in the hotel grounds (so tourists wouldn't be tempted to cross the bridge into the capital itself?).

The hotel also has 47 floors and around 1,000 rooms. But the thing is, there were only around 25 people staying at the hotel, and in our tour group people were sharing rooms so at the most, 20 rooms would have been occupied. All our group were located on the 25th floor, and people were making frequent comments about what could possibly be on the other floors. As far as I know, nobody was brave/foolish enough to try and find out. Although the hotel was much akin to a ghost town, the rooms were nice and clean, and offered a great view of the city, including the Juche Tower.

While we were going to dinner on the first night, we were told that there wouldn't be few, if any shows or festivals on at the moment, due to everyone working in the fields. At that time, the university had closed and a number of government offices had been closed as people were mobilised to plant rice due to fears over food shortages. Having seen similar stories about China, this seems to be the communist way of dealing with problems like that; throw everyone you can at it. It might not be so productive and is certainly not efficient or economical, but it is what they do. It also shows the Juche, or self-reliance, ideology coming to the fore. Our venue for dinner was the National Restaurant, and we were the only guests there. This was also a common theme - we were the only people dining out. Although this isn't hugely surprising, and I doubt if we were not visiting the restaurant would even be open. The food was pretty good actually, and it was obvious they were trying to showcase DPRK's fine dining. It made me think and reflect a little though. They were serving up some of the best food they could offer in the country to us, and yet so many people in other parts of the city are coping on tiny rations of rice and vegetables each month. Again, it's one of the things you just have to accept while you're here. Accompanying dinner was live music, by a group of women in traditional Korean dress. The songs were revolutionary songs, and the music had a definite Russian feel to it. I looked around for copies of "The Best Songs Dedicated To The Great Leader and The General Album... Ever!!!", but alas it was nowhere to be found. We did conclude that the drummer constantly looked like she wanted to just start thrashing the drums, rather than stick to the regular tapping of the cymbal. Not sure what the state of heavy metal music is in DPRK, but she'd fit right in.

Going back to the hotel, I had a couple of beers before heading back to my room. Once there though, I was able to turn the lights out, open the window and gaze out into the night skyline. If you do that in most cities, and especially capital cities, you can hear road works, traffic going past, loud music etc. In Pyongyang it was almost silent. You could hear a couple of voices drifting over the water to the hotel, but other than that it was quiet. There were relatively few lights coming from the large number of buildings that were a kilometre or two away. For some reason I woke up at about 4am in the night, and once again went to the window which we'd left open. Looking out, you could see nothing - there wasn't a single light visible and the only sound was a dog barking somewhere in the city. Very eerie, but a fascinating experience.

Woke up early and switched on the TV in our room to get a fuzzy BBC World transmission (DPRK don't pay for any TV rights, so they have to unscramble the signals as best they can themselves I believe). There was an announcement that it was International Environment Day, which was appropriate as I was probably in the cleanest capital city in the world. Pyongyang makes Tokyo look like a trashy dump, and I didn't see a single piece of litter on the street throughout my entire trip. Another thing Pyongyang has is vast open spaces. It is reported that according to UN environmental statistics, Pyongyang has the largest amount of green and parkland per person of any capital city in the world. The skies were blue, but it was pretty hazy and you could only just see over the Taedong River and into Pyongyang. But after breakfast, that was our destination and first up was the Juche Tower.

An offspring of communism, Juche is summed up quite well by Wikipedia: "The core principle of the Juche ideology since the 1970s has been that "man is the master of everything and decides everything"". The most fascinating features of this structure are all to do with numbers. The tower was created in celebration of Kim Il Sung's 70th birthday, and the building has 25,550 blocks (one for each day of KIS's life). The tower is actually made up of tiers: on the north and south side there are 18 tiers and on the east and west side, 17 tiers. Add those up and you get the magical 70. Also, at the base of the tower there are flowers carved (the Kimilsungia) into the stone. 35 flowers on the east and west sides gives you... you guessed it, 70.

The views from the bottom were pretty good, but the panoramic views from the platform at the top of the tower were breathtaking. You could see the entire city, although there you could see virtually no cars on the roads. There were a couple of bicycles, but almost no motorised transport. Following the Juche Tower, our next stop was the closeby Korean Workers Party Monument. This was erected to celebrate 50 years of the Korean Workers Party, and again the numbers play an important role. The top of the hammer, sickle and brush (denoting the 3 classes of people in society) are 50m high, and the diameter of the monument is also 50m. The history of the Party is written in bronze letters on the wall of the monument, and the size of the things has to be seen first-hand to be appreciated. The people built this in one year, which goes to show how productive they can be when given the resources to play with.

After seeing a little our of the city, we headed out of town, past Kim Il Sung University, and went to Mt Taesong and the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery. Here, around 200 martyrs of revolutionary fighting against Japanese Imperialists are buried and remembered. Each martyr has a statue made from copper and all the busts face Pyongyang, positioned so that each one has a clear view of the capital. Pride of place at the top of the cemetery goes to Kim Il Sung's wife. In the cemetery, sombre revolutionary music player (I'm sure, solely because we were there), which gave a strange feeling to the whole event.

Lunch was taken in the (rotating) restaurant at the 230m tall Television Tower. A rickety old lift got us up to the top but it must have been the slowest lift I've ever been in! It took about 3 agonising minutes to get to the top, with the constant fear that the string that was pulling us up could snap and sent us plummeting to our certain doom at any time! But we made it to the top and the views were spectacular. The food was, once again, the best that DPRK had to offer, and our after lunch entertainment was karaoke courtesy of the 2 waitresses who'd been serving us. A smile towards one of them ended up in her holding my hand while she sang her song (I'm sure talking about the greatness and wonderfullness of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il)! I was slightly distressed that I might have unknowingly just joined the Workers Party of Korea, and wouldn't be allowed to leave!

First stop after lunch was the Arch of Triumph in the middle of Pyongyang. Sound familiar? Well, you might think of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and when you look at this arch you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for the Parisian landmark. This arch was modelled on the one in France, but built bigger so that the claim can be made that this is the largest stone arch in the world.

You'll notice that DPRK likes its world records. The arch was pretty impressive, as was standing in the middle of a 3-lane road for minutes while taking pictures of it, without the slightest fear of a car coming. Try doing that in London! On the photo to the right you can see the Arch of Triumph in the foreground, but I expect many of you are wondering what the triangular-shaped building is in the background. Well that is a secret for now, and all will be revealed in part 3 of this travelogue. Rest assured, it is definately worth waiting for! Near the Arch of Triumph is another stadium in Pyongyang, and outside the stadium were some people preparing their gymnastic routine for the Mass Games.

We headed back out into the sticks after seeing the arch, and towards a Buddhist temple. On the way, we saw loads of people working in the fields, even on a Sunday (their supposed day off during the week). This was real subsistence agriculture though; you saw oxen pulling makeshift ploughs through the soil and in some places it just looked so dry and barren that anything would struggle to grow there. The temple itself was quite interesting, although not as much as the sights I'd seen previously in the day. Apparently, Buddhism was the main religion in DPRK before the Juche idea was put forward. I have read conflicting evidence about this though, & there are many reports that religion is banned in DPRK, despite what we were told by the guides. I can't report either way though - I'm just stating what I saw and keeping unbiased about everything. After the temple trip we headed back into Pyongyang and it got a little surreal. We were taken to a clothing export exhibition, which showed examples of the garments that they had exported to other countries (mainly sportswear). They gave us examples of the countries they exported to (e.g. UK, Hong Kong, China), and we were then taken to a shop where we could buy some DPRK authentic clothing! Other were sceptical but I just jumped right in and guy myself a T-shirt! The whole trip here was as if they were saying, "Look at us! We produce things that other countries want and need!".

A 30 minute bus journey led us back into the country and over to King Tongmyong's tomb. The guide at this site wasn't an English-speaker, but our resident guide translated everything for us. We were shown around the tomb on King Tongmyong, who lived around 5,000 years ago. It was apparently he who set up the nation of Korea, and who founded the first capital city in the country. In the grounds of the temple, there were 3 artists painting the landscape (by chance, or told to be there?). I wanted to think it was the former, and the pictures were pretty good so I bought one. Hopefully not all of that money would go straight to the government. I got the artist's name on the picture and had it dated, and I gave a present to the guide for showing us around. The result: I had another DPRK girl holding and stroking my arm as we walked back to the bus! So much for being told we would have very little contact with the locals.

In the south of Pyongyang is the Mangyongdae Shrine, which is where Kim Il Sung was born and where he spent his early years. The house he was born in was fairly humble and it sounded like his family was quite poor. The house's setting was now in a park and was really nice to walk around in; the walk to the viewing area was interrupted only by a couple of squirrels and chipmunks crossing our path. We were told that Koreans didn't visit the house after KIS's death because they wanted to keep it in a pristine state. Not sure if that is strictly true, but I just nodded and smiled and took it all in.

Blogging and Home based business always goes together like apple pie and ice cream. BUT, what we are not always told is that blogging and online business is a lot of work. Do not let anyone try to let you believe that you can make a lot of money in a short amount of time when you first get started with blogging. It takes a lot or time and hard work to get your blog built, set up and populated to get ready to start sending out your product information. You first have to have a field in which you are very interested in. I mean you have to be passionate enough to want to spend hours writing about it and searching products that go along with it.

Then comes the time you will want to pull your hair out. You have to have enough good information that makes everyone want to get all you have to offer. There are a couple key factors that you really have got to keep in mind when you are starting to blog in order to have it work for you.

Stick to your niche

Once you have picked your niche and created your blog then you want to stick with it on every post. I mean, you have some flexibility here...but you really have to write things that relate to your market or you are going to lose them!

So, if your niche is dog training don't start blogging about cats...unless you are talking about training your dog to relate well to cats, or something!

Post daily

It is really, really important that you post to your blog on a regular basis. I recommend you post daily. Get in that habit of communicating with your market-train them that you can be relied on to provide new content all the time.

If people go to your blog and hardly ever see new stuff...well, they are going to lose interest really quick.

To make money blogging you really have to be on people's minds...and you do that by communicating with them on a regular basis.

Be interesting

Your posts don't have to be long, but they have got to be interesting. Give valuable content. Be different. Be fun. Be yourself. It isn't a writing contest...the "grade" you will get is the number of readers you have...and believe me, they are way more interested in the content than the grammar!

I cannot overstate this point! You can actually make some good money...I mean there are people out there making $5,000-$20,000 a month just with AdSense...because they are interesting and readers keep coming back!

It is okay to be controversial

This goes with being interesting...but it is different enough to deserve extra attention. Realize you are never going to appeal to everybody out there. Not even in a very narrow niche. So be willing to take a stand. Give your opinions...be true to yourself. Will some people not like it? Sure...but others will love it.

Listen, don't be rude about it...although there are people who have been successful that way, too, I don't suggest it. But there is nothing wrong with stirring up some controversy. Be on the cutting edge...get a conversation going and you will have more traffic and links to your blog.

List building

If you are going to make money just from AdSense then maybe you don't have to worry about building a list...but I think that would be a mistake! You have traffic interested in a specific topic, right? So start list building!

Even if you don't think you will ever need a list...you just never know! Maybe you will have a product in that niche down the road. Start building your list now so that you can take advantage of it later.

By building your list you have maximum flexibility and control about where you can take your business in the future!

So, start a blog...write posts that are interesting to your niche...and do that on a regular basis. And don't forget to be building your list! Do these things and blogging will be a great asset to your home based internet marketing businesses!

Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan is the official celebration of one of the largest Dutch ethnic events in the Midwest United States. Residents of Holland proudly celebrate their Dutch heritage with a famous American festival known as Tulip Time.

I decided to write this article after being inspired by a small unit of Veterans of Vietnam War that participated in the Meijer Muziekparade.

We were lucky to be in Holland, Michigan this year to participate in the celebration of eightieth anniversary of the Tulip Time Festival Parade with over 500,000 people in attendance. It was named "Best Small Town Festival" by Readers Digest, listed among the "Top 100 Events in North America" by ABA, and featured in the book Amazing Places to Go in North America.

This year, the first Tulip Time parade (Volksparade) was held on May 6, the second (Kinderparade) on May 7, and last (Muziekparade, which we visited) on May 9.

The idea to adopt the tulip as the official flower of Holland and celebrate it with a festival was born at one of the Woman's Literary Club meeting in 1927 following a suggestion by Miss Lida Rogers, a biology teacher at Holland High School. The next year, the City Council purchased 100,000 tulip bulbs from the Netherlands and planted them in city parks and other areas. In the spring of 1929, thousands of tulips bloomed, and the annual festival was born. In the mid 1930s, Tulip Time already was nationally known. Many famous names like Dorothy Lamour, Pat O'Brien, Christina Aguilera, Verve Pipe, Jars of Clay, and George Raft participated at the festival.

After World War II, Tulip Time continues to attract thousands of tourists every year. In 1947, the Netherlands showed appreciation to the Holland community, which provided aid to their country after the war. The people of Amsterdam presented to Holland a working street organ called "Car Frei Breda," which today entertains Windmill Island visitors. In that same year began a long tradition of a visit from the governor of Michigan, who leads the street scrubbing ceremonies.

Despite poor weather conditions, this year's Muziekparade started almost on time. I was amazed with the participation of numerous marching units - around 60. Even though Holland, Michigan is not a hugely populated community (population around 35,000 residents), the Meijer Muziekparade could be compared with parades of large cities from my point of view.

The parade was so well organized that it captured attention of bystanders sitting and staying along street. It was really a spectacular parade. Units represented numerous organizations, schools, bands, dancing clubs, wagons, small and large businesses, different clubs, or social groups. There were antique automobiles followed by horses, fire department, police, military academy, Michigan Air National Guard, Holland Hockey Association, United States Marine Corps band, and others. Tulips were displayed on most of the cars and trucks and carried in bouquets by participants.

Some of the parade participants included US Senator Carl Levin, US Representative Pete Hoekstra, State Senators Wayne Kuipers and Patricia Birkholz, and Secretary of State Terry Lynn Land, as well as other notables. Some of came from different states of the USA to participate in the Meijer Muziekparade, and all appeared honored to participate.

However, some of the most unforgettable participants who were hailed by the crowds may not even be known by name. While taking pictures, I heard from distance a loud applause - louder than any applause up to that time. Soon, I noticed a small group in military uniform. It was the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 73, presented by seven marching men and one in a wheelchair. The spectators showered them with enthusiastic applause.

Holland celebrates its Dutch heritage not only with the Tulip Festival, but also with over six million tulips as well. Also, in 1976 Holland received impressive publicity by participating in the Tournament of Roses Parade.

As festivals go, the Manchester International Festival is practically a masterpiece. Only just coming up for its' second outing, the festival has already amassed considerable credibility, attention and praise both here and abroad. First launched in 2007, the biennial event is set to burst forth once again with a host of original and inspiring performances from the fields of music, drama and art between Thursday 2nd July and Sunday 19th July 2009.

For those living further afield and for the international followers, Manchester Airport is close by. Several European and UK airports offer flights to Manchester including Edinburgh Airport, Heathrow Airport, Barcelona Airport and Malaga Airport. As the festival venues are spread out widely it may be handy to organise a Manchester Airport car hire, especially if this a first visit to the sprawling and cosmopolitan city with its' many tourist attractions. There are six hire firms based within Manchester Airport Arrivals and these are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.

The festival´s major hook is that it is the world´s first to comprise solely brand new work and arrangements using leading artists. Last time over 200,000 turned out to be amused and amazed and it is expected that that the figure will be larger this year. Several of the events are free but understandably the bigger scale productions are tickets only. Of these a major highlight will be the monster Mancunian collaboration between Mercury Prize winners Elbow and the Hallé, Britain's longest established symphony orchestra.

Possibly the most eagerly anticipated of the events though is likely to be "It Felt like a Kiss", created by Punchdrunk, Adam Curtis and Damon Albarn, who contributed massively to the first festival. This unusual production is promoted as a ghost story, where the ghouls represent the nefarious forces at work beneath the surface of the American dream. Spread over 5 floors of a disused building, the audience is led through a story which begins in 1959. It eerily contrasts the progression of music through the golden age of pop, including original compositions by Albarn, and the US rise in power using elements such as documentary and a fairground ghost train.

Likely to be another favourite is that put together by Grammy-nominated singer/song-writer Rufus Wainwright who has joined forces with director Daniel Kramer and conductor Pierre-André Valade to produce a tale about a once revered operatic soprano called "Prima Donna". Set in 1970, it is about the star's return to the spotlight after a 6 year absence and her attempt to try to beat the demons that originally ended her career. The lead role, Régine, is played by Janis Kelly and is supported by Opera North. Wainwright said inspiration came from sources such as the legendary Maria Callas and Sunset Boulevard.

Back by popular demand, extraordinary male ballet dancer, Carlos Acosta, considered to be the greatest of his generation, will be dancing again this year at the festival. His programme of dance will include Stravinsky´s classic "Apollo" choreographed by Balanchine and Debussy´s "Afternoon of a Faun" devised by Jerome Robbins, as well as a wholly new creation entitled "Young Apollo" by rising star choreographer, Adam Houghland. Accompanied by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and supported by a selection of talented dancers, each evening will see a dramatic intertwining of both classic and modern works.

On to a funkier note and hip hop legends De La Soul are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their album 3 Feet High and Rising with a show at the festival that includes a ten-piece band and special guests. Also, from Friday 3rd July onwards, the specially designed Festival Pavilion gives people a place to meet, relax and be entertained for free by a range of the city´s best club DJs from Contort Yourself, Sweet Sensation, Phil Beckett, Dave Haslam, Natalie Brogan and Micron. There will be a bar dishing up food made from locally sourced ingredients and serving drinks late into the night.

If it all seems a bit too grown up, fear not, as gigs have been set up to cater for the younger generation. "Same Teens" is aimed solely at 15 to 19 year olds and will see DJ sets from Tim Burgess and Televised Crimewave combined with a host of support bands and headliners, Mystery Jets. Other highlights of the festival include performances from Kraftwerk, artist Marina Abramovic and the ironically named Young@ Heart Chorus.

Without doubt, the largest of all the mammals of the sea, weighing an approximate 20.9 tonnes and equivalent to the size of a bus, about 45ft long, that can live up to 150 years old. Whale Sharks are viviparous, (bringing forth young alive). Newborns are over 2 feet long and become sexually mature at 30 years of age.

The Whale Shark is harmless to us humans as they live on the plankton in the sea and will generally scoop up whatever comes too close, especially shoals of sardines and mackerel. Amazingly, they use a form of filtration which separates the plankton from the water (plus anything that gets in the way) by closing its mouth and forcing the water out via its gills and keeping the rest. The Whale Shark has a flattened head, blunt snout and barbels protruding from its nostrils. Rhincodon Typus, The Whale Shark, has sides and back that are grey to brown with white spots and horizontal and vertical pale stripes. This, along with its white belly and the rearward two dorsal fins and a large dual lobbed caudal fin or tail make it a formidable opponent.

Preferring warmer waters, the Whale Shark tends to populate the more tropical seas and then they tend to migrate to the continental shelf of Australia (central west coast) each spring. Spawning then begins around the Ningaloo Reef, ideal with ample amounts of plankton available.

Whilst venerable and threatened species, they are still hunted in many parts of the world, including Taiwan and the Philippines and are in danger of becoming extinct.

On the weekend of July 15th - 19th July , there is the Whale Shark Festival aimed at promoting the preservation of the fragile marine ecosystem, and the tracking of Shark Whales throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, will be held on Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico. This is one of the rare occasions that one can see these amazing creatures in their own environment and realise the awe of their existence.

Whale Sharks are solitary creatures. However for several years now they have come to the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula to feed and mate during the months of May through to October.

Ask around at the docks or downtown Isla Mujeres, for a local fisherman to take you on a boat trip to see the Whale Sharks; be prepared to spend five or six hours viewing these fabulous mammals.

Malayalees all over the world celebrate the Vishu as their new year. Since the mother tongue of the Kerala people is Malayalam, other people call them malayalees. This celebration is as per Malayalam calendar and usually falls on 14th or 15th of April. Some other Indian states also celebrate the same day as their new year. For Example Tamil Nadu celebrates the same day as Tamil New Year and Bengalis celebrate the day as Bengali New Year.

Traditions: Kerala astrologers are calculating Malayalam astrology as per rasi, which is calculated according to the position of sun related to the earth in different months. They will divide each year into different rasi as per sun's position. As per this calculation, sun enters into medam rasi by crossing equator on the 1st day of Medam month of regional Malayalam Calendar. Malayalees consider this day as New Year and celebrate it as vishu. It is important to note that this is not the first day of the Malayalam calendar. Malayalam calendar begins from chingam (August 14th or 15th). Since Hindus are strong believers of Astrology, astrologers will do lot of predictions for the coming year. This prediction, which is prepared by leading astrologers of Kerala, is known as vishu phalam (predictions).

Vishu Celebrations: This festival celebrations usually start with Vishu kani. After the kani, there will be Fire crackers, kaineettam and sadhya. People of most other Indian states use firecrackers for Diwali. However, in Kerala, main use of firecrackers is for this festival to welcome the New Year. Lot of temporary firecracker stalls will be setup along the side of road.

Vishu Kani: Kani is the most important part for this festival. People believe that seeing kani, at the dawn of this day will bring luck and prosperity for the next year. Kani is normally set in a circular metal plate or in circular brass vessel known as uruli.

Hindus believe that whatever one see first in the morning will decide the luck for that day and call it as kani. The same way they believe that, the New Year should start with seeing good and lucky objects, to bring luck and prosperity for the whole year. Senior lady of the house will set kani on the preceding night, so that she can also see kani at the early morning of the day. Having been born and raised in California and having lived there until 1970, I (alone or with my family) have felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage from any of them other than, perhaps, some minor cracked plastered ceilings and walls.

There is a USGS website that lists all California earthquakes recorded since 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0 during all those years. There are only a few quakes that stand out vividly in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the above named website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.

Well, being there during a quake has never been insignificant to me. In my youth, both in the classroom and at home, it was scary when either place started to shake. All of us, whether young or old, seemed to share that instant fear that results when the ground beneath us begins to move and we can't do anything about it. Since I have no recollection of any dates of those tremors that I did experience in my youth, they were either "insignificant" or forgotten.

There are three eventful earthquakes that I , alone or in the company of one or more of my family, did experience. I remember them vividly - they are difficult to forget. The first was another one of those that did not make the USGS list of major earth movements in California. It was in 1955 and our oldest daughter who was then six years old was walking with me in our back yard in Redwood City. As the shaking intensified I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter and I, and the tree) wobbled back and forth for an almost interminable two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.

The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the famous landmark. By the time we reached the entrance to Disneyland, a distance of only a few blocks, all the streets and sidewalks were awash from the water that had sloshed out of the many nearby hotel swimming pools as a result of the prolonged back and forth shaking.

My last experience with an earthquake was a lonely one during a religious retreat in San Juan Bautista, California. It was some time in the late sixties and I was alone in the old on site chapel. As the building, with its woodwork creaking, started to shake I quickly headed for the door to the outside. I remember saying a little prayer - something like, "Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father. But, if I must go, what better place to finally meet you!"

If you are outside when the earth starts to shake, it would probably be safest to be in the middle of an empty parking lot. Little if anything could then drop on to you and hurt you. If not in a parking lot, and there is a tree nearby, grab it and hold on for dear life. Try to get as far away as possible from a brick building - especially an old one. If there are old brick buildings everywhere, then try to stand in a doorway of one of them with the hope that it will protect you from falling debris. If you are inside when the shaking begins, again stand in a doorway or crawl under a heavy piece of furniture like a dining room table. Under a bed with a good mattress is not the worst place to hide. These are my personal safety suggestions of what to do when the earth starts to shake. Our home is here in Juneau, Alaska which is located along a highly seismically active area called "The Ring of Fire" that, thankfully, has remained quiet all the years since 1970 when we first arrived in this most beautiful and peaceful place. So far, the only thing that has fallen on us has been the rain.

About Earthquakes

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded happened in 1960 in Chile. Registering 9.5 on the Moment magnitude scale, it created a tsunami that swept the entire Pacific Ocean. In 1972, 90% of the city of Managua, Nicaragua, was destroyed by a midnight earthquake that killed over 10,000 people. Then in 1985, the Great Mexican Earthquake struck, killing as many as 30,000 people, most of whom were never found. In 1989, San Francisco and surrounding areas experienced the "World Series Quake."

In 2003, the Bam Citadel, the largest adobe structure in the world and built before 500 B.C. was almost completely destroyed, together with 70% of the city of Bam and 70,000 residents.

Most of them happen along what is known as the circum-Pacific seismic belt or the "Pacific Ring of Fire" bounding the Pacific tectonic plate. With high-population cities like Mexico City, Tehran, and Tokyo growing in areas of high risk, it is possible that a future earthquake could take as many as 3 million lives.

It's hard to understand why people insist on living in earthquake-prone areas like San Francisco and the mountains of central and South America. But in fact, earthquakes are a common phenomenon, small ones happening somewhere in the world every day. Characterized by shaking and ruptures in the land, earthquakes also cause dangerous avalanches and landslides, fires like the terrible 1906 San Francisco experience, soil liquefaction where buildings literally sink into the earth, and massive tsunamis. Because the damage they do is enduring, they also leave high risks for disease in their wake as people try to find potable water to drink and dry, safe places to sleep and live.

People who live in high-probability earthquake zones must live each day as it comes, knowing that their fragile lives could be over in an instant. Knowing that tragedy can strike at any time, they prepare for it.

More and more environmentally friendly green builders are joining the ranks of the socially responsible building industry. Great stuff, and why not build more energy efficient buildings, with materials that are made with the least pollution or impact to the environment? Sure, that all makes sense.

Even if you are not an environmentalist, you can obviously see the value of increased efficiency and less pollution, that's all well and good. Still, I've seen builders use less steel and concrete in their foundations by putting more rock underneath and such for the base. Okay, but the crushing of rock takes energy, machinery, fuel and has an impact during the transportation phase.

And even if you can justify that or call it an over decrease in pollution doing it that way, well what about this weaker foundation cracking during an earthquake causing the building to be a total loss? If the building is a total loss because it could not withstand a "biggie" earthquake, then you have to demolish it, haul away the debris, and rebuild it again. Thus, you built the same building twice.

Well, I ask doesn't that totally negate the entire reasoning behind the LEEDS certification? Further, we should be concerned that unions are joining in and pressing local, state and Federal Governments to require LEEDS certification for new buildings and lobbying politicians to give tax incentives. Personally, I believe that energy efficient building is wise, but if it is so good it doesn't need to be subsidized.

The free markets will choose LEEDS because tenants and building owners demand it to save on energy costs. And we need to temper the building materials with strength in Earthquake Risk regions, especially in California that is over do for an 8.0 otherwise we will completely defeat the purpose and theory behind LEEDS. As the water began to drain from New Orleans in 2005, we learned that most of the homeowners in New Orleans did not have flood insurance, since they were supposedly in “low risk” areas. The over 60% of homeowners will need to depend upon their own savings, and limited federal assistance, to rebuild New Orleans – at an uncalculated cost for homeowners and taxpayers.

Could that level of disaster, especially that level of uninsured disaster, happen in California? Less than 15% of California homeowners currently carry earthquake insurance, due to its high cost, the “can’t happen to me or my house” factor, and mortgage providers not requiring coverage. The next big quake will result in billions of uninsured damage – but is earthquake insurance really worth the high cost?

How Did We Get Here?

The state of California requires that all homeowner’s insurance providers to at least offer earthquake insurance (albeit, at a high cost). Until 1994, it was widely available – but the high damage costs of the Northridge earthquake resulted in 97% of homeowner’s insurance providers pulling out of the state the California. In response, the California Earthquake Authority was formed by the California legislator to provide earthquake insurance.

What Is the California Earthquake Authority, and How Does It Work?

The California Earthquake Authority provides two-thirds of the earthquake policies in California, sold through their member providers, like Allstate and State Farm. A homeowner purchases the policy through their regular insurance agent, but the policy is actually a CEA policy.

The CEA currently has about $7.2 billion to pay claims, which it states is enough to pay foreseeable damages (Loma Prieta in 1989 had $6 billion in total damages). If the damage claims are more than $7.2 billion, then each claim would be paid a prorated portion of their losses – unlike a regular insurance company, which promises to pay the actual damages under the insurance policy. The state of California cannot help pay the claims out of general funds.

The policies also have a high deductible – usually 15% of the value of the dwelling. In other words, your home must be damaged more than 15% of its value before the insurance starts paying. So, this insurance is not for cracks in the driveway – it is for significant structural damage to your home. The policy also pays for limited contents (starting at $5K) and loss of use (starting at $1500).

Why Is Earthquake Insurance So Expensive?

Insurance policy premiums are calculated based on probabilities – the probability that a house like yours in a neighborhood like yours will catch fire, or a driver like you will have an accident. With data from millions of homes, these probabilities can be calculated with reasonable accuracy. But, no one can reliably predict the probability that there will be an earthquake strong enough to damage your home.

And, as you can imagine, damages from an earthquake, flood, or hurricane, are widespread, over potentially thousands of square miles – instead of one or a few dozen homes, as in a fire. As such, the insurer would have to pay either zero claims, or billions of dollars of claims – too much variance to reasonably plan for or price accurately.

Are We Really At Risk Here in San Jose?

According to the USGS, there is a 62% probability that there will be an earthquake of 6.7 or greater (like the Northridge quake) in the Bay Area in the next 30 years. In my zip code (San Jose 95126), USGS calculates a 80% chance of a 6.0 earthquake and a 20% chance of a 7.0, in the next 30 years. Whether you consider that to be a high risk depends on your risk tolerance for earthquakes – I consider that a high risk of a moderate earthquake and a somewhat low risk of a terrible earthquake, over the next 30 years.

But like any issue involving real estate – it is all local. Where your home is actually located significantly affects your risk – bedrock, reclaimed land from the bay, soil type, nearby streams, actual distance from the epicenter – all can affect potential damage.

But of course, many earthquakes occur where the USGS was not even aware of a fault line – and we never know when or where it will happen, until it happens.

Should I Obtain Earthquake Insurance?

Factors to Consider:

Could you afford to pay for the rebuilding your home from your own savings & investments?
Can you afford to pay the high cost of insurance, indefinitely?
Could make payments on your current mortgage and on a new loan to rebuild?
Can you mitigate your potential losses by bolting your roof to the walls and the walls to the foundation, for example?
What is your tolerance for the risk of an earthquake?
What is the risks of your current home construction (type, age, foundation)?
What are the risks of your specific location (soil type, distance to known faults)?

Are the Costs Worth It?

Let’s assume that you have a home that would cost $250K to rebuild, you will own the home for the next 30 years, and your earthquake premiums are $1200 per year. Over the next 30 years, that would be a total of $36,000 in premiums (assuming your premiums do not increase, to simplify calculations).

Instead of purchasing insurance, you invest the premiums in a diversified mutual fund. With an 8% annual return, you would have $135,000 (pre-tax) in year 30.* But of course, you only have that total in year 30, not in year one – meaning that if the earthquake happens tomorrow, you don’t have the money.

The deductible is another big turn off for many homeowners. The insurance pays only for large structural damage, not broken dishes or cracked driveways – meaning that it is less likely you will use it. However, be aware that you will not need to come up with the cash for the deductible – you may either opt to not undertake those repair or rebuilding costs, or you can apply for an SBA loan to pay for the deductible (assuming a federal disaster area is declared).

Why Not Just Get Federal Aid, or “Walk Away” and Let the Bank Have the Property?

The federal government would probably provide access to SBA loans, if the area is declared a federal disaster area (no small business required). However, the $200K maximum SBA loan may not be enough to rebuild your home – and, it is a loan that you need to pay back (in addition to your current mortgage).

If you have refinanced your mortgage, you have a recourse mortgage – which means that not only can the bank foreclose on the property in case of non-payment, the bank can also come after your personal assets and future income in case of non-payment. So you cannot just walk away, especially if you have a good income and some personal assets. The bank may help out by deferring payments for a few months, but you still must pay back the loan.

Last Thoughts

We have earthquake insurance on our home. Our home was not yet built in the 1906 earthquake (so who knows if it would stand), it is 75+ years old and is not bolted to the foundation, and we have a refinanced mortgage. For my family, the insurance premiums are worth peace of mind in case of a major earthquake disaster. That’s exactly what insurance is for – the “you never know.”

Most of us who live in Southern California are aware that a major earthquake is bound to occur within the next 10 years. We look toward the scientist to inform and prepare us for those dreaded earth quake strikes.

I would rather not talk about the "big one" that has been expected to occur for decades because these sort of predictions tend to ignite deeper fears in our already fearful position in these earthquake ridden regions. We have heard and read about the big quake that is bound to happen so much that we have become desensitized.

The magnitude does not seem as significant as the amount of confusion in the collapse and destruction of buildings, structures, moving vehicles and machinery.

Let's explore the ezine advertising niche and see what readers may "learn" from some writers. "If it is on the Internet, it must be true ..." is a common wrong conclusion. Some readers learn quickly a weird tip, spread it fast to friends or colleagues, more and more people apply the tip until ... everything explodes and then people cry angrily, "Ezine advertising doesn't work!"

Let's skip the articles about "enzines" (their writers don't even know the correct spelling). Let's skip the articles that don't have any purpose other than repeating "solo ads" in each sentence only for the sake of trying to rank well in search engines even if the article doesn't have a clear meaning. So Called Tip # 1 - "Tell in the solo ads the story about how you went from nothing to becoming an expert."

Facts: Successful people usually are busy developing their business and they rarely read articles. Most of the readers of an article are not experts but newbies or average persons who spend their time hoping to discover something new or a solution to their problems.

Conclusion: As a matter of fact, the tip teaches you to lie ... This is a no-no in advertising. Unfortunately this tip is very much used by newbies. I've seen so many ezine ads telling readers how much money the advertiser earned last month by promoting a certain program, but if you ask the advertiser when she/he joined that program you will be surprised by the answer, "A few days ago, why do you ask?"

So Called Tip # 2 - "People want stories and they want stories about YOU."

A funny piece of advice related to the first tip: Actually, the truth is that people do NOT care about you unless you're a famous person. People care about them. Tell them a story about you only if you want to fail. If you want to succeed, tell them how THEIR life can be improved and THEIR problems can be solved.

So Called Tip # 3 - "Before placing an order, ask the ezine publisher these questions ..."

It's very good to contact the publisher before placing the order, but when an experienced ezine advertiser reads the questions the readers of some articles are taught to ask, she/he can only laugh. Here is an example of such question: "How many subscribers does your ezine have?"

Let me give you some practical information taken from real life. If the ezine publisher is professional, then the ezine has its own website, the page containing the advertising packages is easy to be found and contains at least two important pieces of information: the number of subscribers and the prices. If you don't find such information, you're not supposed to ask the publisher about them ... but to run away. You don't want to advertise in ezines published by amateurs.

There are many other so called ezine advertising tips but I didn't plan to write a novel here ... However, I think you already got the point: don't consider any piece of advice or article as a law that has to be applied. Be a smart ezine advertiser: after reading a certain tip, put yourself in the shoes of the reader who is supposed to read the ezine ad written following that tip.

If there is a discernible difference, it could be that e-zines are usually also published online in a more open format. This means that the same information that is included in the e-zine is also published on a web page or pages in order to facilitate increased traffic to a web site. An e-zine will also frequently include article openings and then link to the corresponding web site to allow the reader to view the entire article.

A newsletter is usually a mass mailing designed to inform a specific group about current events and happenings whether they are directly related to the web site or not. It's 3:00 am, your sleep has been interrupted by something crawling on your face, legs, private parts-and you don't know what to do. First you wonder if it's your imagination, but then the crawling feelings are accompanied by a biting, stinging sensation--sometimes it seems to be from under your skin. You get out of bed, turn on a light and take a look to see what's causing the problem. You see nothing. Hoping for relief you scratch it. Moments later, the biting returns and it's relentless. The next day you may find a rash developing or what appears like bites on your skin.

The only evidence of something going on is that you might find a gritty sandy like substance-black specs-in your bedding or some strange fibers developing on your skin or or tiny sparkly specs of light reflecting sunlight on your arms.

In some cases, it looks like a mosquito bite or the beginnings of a zit but it never goes away. In fact it multiplies in a short period of time.
What's causing the biting, rashes, lesions, and what do you do about it? First you try some over the counter remedy such as Benadryl or Gold Bond medicated powder and there's no benefit. Then you go to your doctor expecting a prescription for a skin cream to quickly eliminate the problem. Your doctor examines you and can't find anything wrong except that he accuses you of scratching your skin causing it to inflame. You might convince him to prescribe something like Quill or Elimite and it works for a few days and then it's back to the hell of itching and biting. Eventually your doctor may take a biopsy (plug sample) and you're looking forward to finally identifying the causative agent. The test comes back negative and eventually your doctor suggests to you that it's stress, in your imagination, anxiety, general nervousness, Rosacea's Red Face, or worse yet that you have acrophobia.

Actually, you've may have been invaded by one of several strains of skin parasites. While most skin parasites are harmless, there are some skin parasites such as Morgellons (of unknown origin), unknown to most doctors, that can make life a living hell.

Job, of the Old Testament in the Holy Bible, may very well have been the first human on record who suffered from these skin parasites which are in the form of skin mites, nematodes, collembola and or skin fungus.
Some species of parasites that usually live outdoor on plants and animals can adapt to living both in human skin and bring protozoan, bacterium, and fungi organisms that live systemically (in the blood). Without guidance in an effective treatment the parasites can reside in one's skin for years and make scabies (a form of mite) look like the common cold.

To further complicate life, this skin problem can be easily transmitted from animal or human to human by simple contact, i.e., beauty parlor, lying down on an infested couch or rug, trying on new clothing in a store that was tried on by someone who was infested....

My hell started from a cloud of dust that descended upon me after I pulled a strangulating vine from a tree in my back yard so the medical specialist I consulted couldn't pull that acrophobia stuff on me. Early on I experimented with garlic. I tried other things like curry, but garlic was the ticket. I started with 30,000 mg. of garlic per day and ended up at around 240,000 mg. per day before I freed myself of the parasitic itchy bity symptoms. For me, garlic completely tamed down the symptoms of the itchy parasites to where I could be human. Of course I tried many different medications during this time and each time I went off garlic to see if the medication or remedy was working, it would flare up again because none were working. Eventually garlic lost its magic and it was back to itching hell.

Fortunately shortly thereafter, I discovered the value of the diet which is called the Parasite-Lyme DietSM. In fact I'm convinced that no treatment will work without getting on the eating diet and staying on it. There are foods such as fruits and many carbohydrates that feed the parasites and foods that starve them. I started it as an elimination diet--ate only eggs initially and within a few days I was itch and bite free--it worked that fast for me. It took over ten years to discover all the nuances of the diet so I could enjoy foods like shrimp scampi, chicken in butter sauce...

It's a three stage diet, the first of which is very strict. As stage I is successful, one can often advance to Stage II within a week or so and eat more leniently. It didn't take long to think I was cured, but every time I went off the diet for a week or so, the itching and biting returned. In time with certain medications, I could advance to Stage III of the diet and enjoy limited types of fruit, honey, chocolate cake...

1. When you trade in the stock market you can't let your emotions make your decisions. I've seen people get emotional when their stock has made a major move downward. They panic and dump the shares as soon as possible, thinking that there' more to come. When a stock drops in value, you must see if the company is reporting negative information or if other traders are taking profits from a recent upswing in value. If there are no problems with the company then what you have is a buying opportunity for you to add to your position.

2. Before you invest in any stock you must do your research on that company and the sector that they are in. I like to refer to research as "doing your due diligence". Reading financial reports and balance sheets are a key to knowing if a companies fundamentals are solid. Once you can do that you need to learn how to read their chart. Following the chart will give you an idea if a dip or a spike in price will coming soon.

3. Avoiding "great stock tips" will always save you from getting caught up in the hype of stock. You need to ask yourself why this person is giving this information to you. Is it because they're investing in this and need other people to boost share price? If a person has "inside information" on a company, they wouldn't be allowed to tell you since it's illegal to do so.

4. When you have decided on a stock to invest in, you don't buy all of the shares at once. If you do and the price drops(which they do at times), you won't have any capitol to buy any more. What you need to do is buy incrementally. You need to figure how much total money you will invest into this stock. Divide that in half and that would be your first buy in. When a stock drops below your cost basis by more than 8%, you buy half of the remaining amount you have on the side. If the stock goes up from there you wait and see where it goes to in value. If it drops another 5% from your second buy in, you purchase the remaining shares.

5. Before you buy into a company you must have a exit strategy. Unfortunately there will be times when the stock that you see as a sound investment drops in price too much(or rises beyond 20%) you need to know how and when to get out. Yes, there are other forces at work that will cause a great stock to just drop. To name one, is when investors invest in what they call "shorting a stock". They buy stock for the purpose of going down in value(when you research a stock you can find out how much trading is going on this way. An exit strategy is needed to be in place before you buy into a stock.

So much is being written about the emergence of “Quantitative Funds” and why this type of investment is becoming popular among both individual and professional investors. Eleanor Laise, in her Wall Street Journal article titled “Stock-Picker Jobs Going to Computers” wrote that “investors are attracted to quant funds for their non-emotional, disciplined method of investing. It is a well known fact amongst investment professionals that “investor psychology” is the most difficult variable for anyone to manage. Our fear and greed most often get in the way of good judgment and a well thought out investment strategy.” One method of developing a quantitative portfolio includes adding alpha to the investment screening process. Although the idea of alpha is thought to be complicated and only for the technically inclined, it’s available for any investor and now easier than ever to utilize. With this strategy readily accessible, it makes sense to build a portfolio of long-term investments and then augment the return by actively trading a portion of the portfolio using technical analysis and portfolio management.

The real question is not if it can be done, but how can it done. Specifically, how does an investor, be it individual or professional, utilize the power of portable alpha? Before the “how to” can be understood, one must appreciate what alpha is and what investments are available that make utilizing portable alpha easy.

What is Portable Alpha?

According to Lawrence C. Strauss, in his Barron’s Online article titled “Does Low Volatility Mean Lower Returns” alpha “the money-management industry’s buzzword du jour refers to the measure of a stock’s performance beyond what the market provides. But how to calculate Alpha and more importantly how to compare various investment alternatives simultaneously using the same definition of Alpha has been a difficult problem for investors to solve.” Alpha, in its purest sense, is the measure of a fund or portfolio's risk-adjusted return relative to the market. A positive alpha value, such as 1.0, means that the fund or portfolio outperformed the market by 1.0%. The higher the alpha value, the more incremental gain is awarded for actively managing the investment by choosing securities that outperform the market, as compared to merely accepting the market return.

Portable alpha is “portable” because it can be applied across various asset classes. If a manager or individual investor increases a portfolio’s risk-adjusted return relative to the market (alpha) by investing in securities that have little or no correlation with the market, then that manager has created portable alpha. Portable alpha is a powerful investment tool because it can provide investors with greater diversification in their portfolios, lower risks and greater total returns as compared to conventional asset allocation.

There are other varieties of alpha, but in all cases a positive alpha value indicates that the fund or portfolio manager has "beaten the market" through fund or stock selection. Alpha Advisor Service, LLC uses a weighted alpha factor which places more emphasis on recent price movement as opposed to past activity. The purpose of doing so is to pinpoint stocks and funds whose positive momentum is building rather than those that have reached the peak of their uptrend.

Investments That Facilitate Using Portable Alpha

Applying portable alpha to your portfolio can be accomplished by using trade-friendly investment funds provided by ProFunds, Rydex or Fidelity. These companies provide a wide variety of mutual fund selections, including index, sector, bond, precious metals, and international, which can be traded frequently, most without penalty, early trading fee or commission. Some of these companies offer funds designed for hedging strategies. Or for the slightly more aggressive, a few of these companies provide leveraged funds which are designed to outperform their benchmark index through the use of leverage. Exchange Traded Funds, which come in as many styles as mutual funds, also provide an easily-accessible tool for adding alpha to a portfolio.

Many analytical sources provide statistical profiles of investments, most of which are mathematically accurate. The predominant short coming in these tools is that they do not consistently analyze all alternatives. Bond investments will be measured using benchmarks unique to bonds while small cap stocks will be measured against the Russell 2000 etc. To select the best investments, using a level playing field by which to measure portfolio returns is the most attractive.

How to Utilize Portable Alpha

The first step towards utilizing portable alpha involves developing an asset allocation strategy specifically tailored to personal investment objective, risk tolerance and time horizon. Determine how much of the portfolio should be strategically allocated to specific asset classes such as stocks, bonds, sectors, international investments, precious metals and cash. Assign a percentage of investment dollars to each class, and then prepare to fill in the asset class with an appropriate selection of investments.

To select the best investments for each asset class, rank the investments by alpha score from highest to lowest. Then pick the top one or two options for investment within each asset class. Put in place a trailing stop loss on each investment at a reasonable level and watch its performance. If the price violates your watch level, sell the investment and replace it with the next most highly ranked alternative from its class. If no alternatives are available with a positive alpha, hold those dollars in cash until such time as a candidate presents itself. Don’t invest those dollars in another asset class; hold them until a candidate in the particular class becomes available.

This approach satisfies the buy and hold dogma that is unfortunately so engrained in the minds of today’s investors. It supplies adequate diversification while at the same time providing a level of return that’s in line with market expectations. Hopefully, by this point recent market activity has convinced most investors that the idea of buying a stock or fund and holding it indefinitely is no longer the optimal investment strategy. Human nature has a tendency to result in buying and selling at the worst possible moments, minimizing gains and maximizing losses. That’s why the development and implementation of a disciplined investment strategy is so advantageous to today’s investors.

Taking this approach one step further and evolving from a strategic allocation to a tactical or dynamic allocation is the easiest way to generate excess investment returns within a buy and hold strategy. Tactical allocation is predicated on the belief that not all asset classes perform in the same manner and that investment cycles do exist. With so many index funds and ETF’s that mimic the performance of market indices and style-box investments, analyzing the alpha scores of these investments is the quickest way to determine where to increase or decrease a portfolio’s allocations.

Today, with so many internet-based trading platforms available through brokerage firms and banks with minimum fees and almost no trading commissions, active personal investing makes more sense then ever. 5.) Don't Be Pressured - Making a business decision is big. You should not be pressured or feel like you have to make a decision today. Its your investment and your decision. If someone pressures you to join. Then I would back away.

6.) Plan of Action - What is the Plan of Action once you join. What is your responsibilities. How do those responsibilities allow you to earn money online? How long before you see a profit? Ask These questions. Don't fall for that you have little to no work. This will be your business and you want to clearly understand what your task is to having a successful business.

7.) What Sets Them Apart - Why are they different then any other mentor or mentoring team. Why should you choose them. Its not always about How much money they make, how are they going to teach you to earn money online.

8.) How Much Money Do They Earn Online - Okay in normal life this is ethically not a good question to ask. But in the Internet Business world it is okay. Yes they can tell you anything but usually people who are really making money will have a video of proof or a copy of receipts. Ask them for it? Its okay you are qualifying them.

9.) Marketing and Advertising - This is The core of your business. If they don't have a marketing or advertising plan you will not earn money online with any Internet Business. Make Sure To Ask them, have them be exact, and what your advertising expenses will be. . HINT: Marketing is not one source it is multiple sources that work together to bring quality traffic to your site. Don't fall for we have one marketing and advertising firm that will earn you an extraordinary income.

10.)The Automated Question - Automated Business are the wave of the future. Everyone wants automated. No work and you will earn money online. That is absolutely false. Determine the main focus of your website or blog. 1. Develop a plan.

You need to develop a solid plan. Develop your business plan using successful individuals as a model. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. Do what you know works.

2. Work your plan!

The key word here is work. It is the rare business indeed that requires no work and pays big dividends. Almost all successful businesses require some sort of work. And most successful business owners started out working long and hard. Many of them started out by working 12 to 14 hours a day. 2. Use technology.

This is why so many people are lured into day trading as it is often seen as the holy grail of trading, the one that can make you rich overnight.

It is no surprise then that in recent times the internet and even TV has become swamped with people toting their latest day trade system and how it can make you rich overnight, I wonder then how many of these vendors would run for the hills if someone were to ask them for actual proof of income from using the system? I'll bet it would be a lot!

Dealing in foreign currency, stocks and shares or any such market is akin to gambling. You are basically gambling on whether the prices go up or down, of course this is a rather educated gamble. To do this you will need to watch the market trend to get a feel for it. The longer you watch the market trend for the more accurate your predictions will be. The problem is in the forex market time is money and waiting too long can mean missing great opportunities.

There are many people out there who will tell you that you can predict market trends after watching the market for just a few hours, personally I think this is more akin to a leap of faith than actual research.

The trader even when armed with the very best day trade system will make wins and make losses what is important is to make more wins than losses as there is no way that you will make enough profit in a day (unless you are very lucky) to stay afloat very long. There are many software packages and a whole bunch of day trade systems out there to help you along the way, it is nigh on impossible for a machine to predict exactly what is going to happen in a short space of time.

The best advice I can give you if you want a solid day trade system is to get an online trading account that comes with software to make your life easier and then use a demo account to ensure your profitability until you are entirely comfortable to start playing for real with your own hard earned money.

There are many books out there on forex trading both on and off-line and I would suggest that you read as much about day trading as you can if you are new to this exciting career.

Garage Sales

So, yeah.

Decided to look around and gain some more information about how this blogging stuff works. Decided that having a clear direction and a profile could help traffic stay, which means more bookmarks, yada yada, more money from internet for me.

Since I now have an Idea what I'm going to be writing about in this blog, how about I do that!

In 2005 I went all year without getting "a real job" one of my favorite ways of making money during that time was just to go to yard sales and by things I knew I could resell for more than I was buying it for. I can't remember exactly what I was making from it, my best guess would be $30 per day minus a few dollars for gas.

Mostly I was selling books and CD's back to stores. It isn't rare for someone to sell a shoebox or more of used CD's for $5, often stores that sell used CD's will buy them from you for $1 or slightly more per individual CD. Although I started out by doing a the same with books you have to avoid buying so many types of books that it just wasn't worth after a while to be buying books for anything more than my personal pleasure.

Several other items I remember making good money off of was exercise equipment, furniture and aquariums. I was able to buy a bowflex for $25 which I sold to a friend for $100 who then tells me he sold it for $300. I bought a 100 gallon aquarium knowing another friend would love it for $20, they gave me $50 for it.

Remember, all around you people for some reason or another are selling things for much less than they are worth. All you have to do is be there when they want to get rid of it and take it somewhere where people will pay more for it.

Easy Rules to follow for Beginning Investors

1. When you buy a stock. Hold on to it. An investors best ally is time. The S&P 500 has averaged an annual return of approximately 11% since 1929. In 40 years an investment of $1000 a year would be worth nearly $1,000,000. Would you like to become a millionaire? If you do then I'd suggest you start investing as soon as possible and leave the money in.

2. Compound interest is one of the greatest inventions of man. Take advantage of it and open up an online savings account. Many online savings accounts have annual returns of around 5%. This money will compound on itself so that the interest your money is earning will itself earn interest as the account stays open. Many stocks have similar features, the dividends on the stocks I purchase are automatically reinvested in that company. This is a form of compound interest.

3. The market is down this week, what should you do? Buy. Make sure that a company is either in good financial health first. But when the market starts falling and you want to make more money, you need to start buying. Remember "Buy low, Sell high!". It is actually that easy. There are many different players and factors that influence the stock market. Some of them even earn themselves titles, like "Santa Rallies" where retail stocks begin climbing during the winter months as people head out to buy presents and investor try to figure out what they are buying and what companies will benefit the most.

There are also seasonal sell offs when major financial institutions sell assets in order to realign their portfolios. Just because the major companies are selling these stocks doesn't mean they are a bad investment for you though!

4. Pay yourself first. This is a strange statement, and possibly dangerous if you can't control yourself, but another important rule to investing is to take the money you may ordinarily waste on superfluous items and instead "pay yourself first" and put that money to work for you in the stock markets or atleast in a high yield savings account.

Investing is not as complicated as it looks and if you are willing to put just an hour into researching a stock pick you will be reasonably prepared to make investment decisions for yourself and begin to own your own financial future.

When will Bear Stearns be a buy?

I have a general distaste for Bear Stearns. The company sold itself down the river. Gutting its core business over the past several years in an attempt to make profits from the housing and credit markets.

They do have a new leader now though. My first impression of him wasn't very positive, guy seemed like he had notes of buzzwords written on his palm.

Bear seems though to be slightly undervalued right now, making it an attractive investment and a potential take-over target. But the question I have is how much longer will Bears misadventures conitue to bring it down. Will it recover in a descent amount of time or will it as I'm afraid be brought down much lower as a result of lousey internal culture and biases.

I'm going to wait a few more months. I just thought you might like to know.

Can't afford to fill your gas tank?

I've been noticing it alot more lately. I pull up to get gas and find that whoever came before me only purchased a gallon or two of gas. Yesterday I even noticed that the person who used the pump before I did paid for $4 worth of gas with a credit card!

On the financial channels the debate rages on about whether or not the U.S. economy is heading toward recession for 2008. Those people buying only as much gas as they need kind of hints to me we already are. I'm waiting until the earnings reports come out to make any sell decisions. But right now I think we are just in the middle of a typical January sell-off. As the big financial institutions try to get rid of some of their holdings to raise capitol.

The new CEO of Bear Stearns was on CNBC earlier today. "Conservative" was his buzz word, I swear that every sentence he said had it in there atleast once. When asked about whether or not Bear Stearns had enough cash available he found ways to put it in there even more often, to the point I actually started laughing.

I'm going to start prowling for good buys this weekend. I can't really afford much. I'll probably only spend about $250. But I'm confident that I will be able to find a stock in the $5 range that will wind up paying a $0.25 - $0.30 dividend for 4th quarter of 07. Most likely a Mid-cap with ties to the "housing meltdown" or the "credit crunch". I've always enjoyed the mellow dramatic language of economists. I just call them all the same colorful thing, might explain why I make more money off the markets than my reporting on them.

I'm coming from the viewpoint that hey, shit happens. The outgoing Presidents best gift to the next president is always a shakey economy. Bush got one from Reagan, Clinton got one from Bush, and Bush got one from Clinton. I hope the next president will make that list more diversified.

The China Olympics are coming up. Which combined with the housing problems and credit problems is going to drive down materials. I'm not aware of any major building projects China has planned for after the Olympics and see their preparations for the Olympics as a major driver of mining stocks the last few years. I did better with PCU and BHP than I have with oil.

But yeah, if you're short on money. Invest. Filling up a Suburban may cost $120, but my $250 invested has a good chance of being $500 if not more on a good earnings report. Heck, even if its not so great I'm not going to pick a stock that isn't a step ahead of its competitors as far as making a recovery in Value.

Getting Traffic

According to adsense I'm well below what I had been expecting as far as traffic. With other kinds of websites I've built it seemed as if once people started finding my sites the traffic would just start snowballing. The only site I still have running from last year, a porn site. Still gets over 2000 hits every month. The kind of traffic I'm hoping to get with the Blogs I'm currently writting.

I'm also considering using Article posts to expand my reach. I'm trying to write longer posts, and more frequent. I believe that this is going well but I won't be sure until I start sending articles to posts.

500 words per article is what I'm shooting for. 10 articles a day should give me a proper base. Having english as my native language and the ability to write in a way that interests people should also help me.

So much easier than I thought

I spent the last week or so trying to figure out how this blogging thing works. Then I started doing it and now I'm kind of ashamed at how much time I've wasted. Everything I actually needed was right there for me. That the way things work sometimes though. You spend so much time trying to do something and getting ready to do it, then you do it and realize that it was much easier than you thought that it would be.

Thats how I got into investing as well. I spent months reading books on trading and checking out all sorts of investing websites. I was so scared at how complicated things seemed. I was almost to the point of just giving up before I had even started. Then one day while I was watching CNBC I caught a mention of a company that was about to have its shares stopped trading because of an FDA panel meeting. The stock was cheap and the product sounded like a no-brainer for approval so basically on a whim I bought 100 shares for alittle under $5 a share. 3 days later I sold all those shares, for $17 a share. I haven't had quite that big of a win since then, my latest investment though is up 50% in 3 weeks. But the important thing is that I started, I didn't "get ready", I didn't sit around planning what I would do, I didn't spend all my time making sure that I knew everything I possibly could. I just took the first step.

Be honest with yourself. Do you get better results by studying or by experimenting and actually doing things. If you really want more help though I do know of several propducts that might help you.

Day 2(Basically)

Went out last night instead of working. Not a great idea, but atleast I have now left the house for the first time this week. Signed up several affiliate programs Marl is a bot that picks stocks, brilliant idea. The original program the guy wrote makes $4 billion plus a year for Goldman Sachs. This however just covers penny stocks, I'm impressed by the software. $47 for newsletter subscription.Robert G. Allen's Ultimate real Estate system. $39
And Creating Wealth without Risk a tax foreclosure real estate system.
Other than that I'm getting signedup for adsense and Digg and reading webmaster boards all day. I'm hoping for $30/day by the end of January 2008. After that I'll start investing more and go to $50 or $100 a day. Depending on how things work out. I'm also going to try to get atleast 4 blogs going. Two of which are already up.

This is going to be a great year for me. I made all of my goals for last year within the first six months. Now my goals are higher, my discipline better and my knowledge double. I wouldn't mind ending the year a multi-millionaire.

I absolutly hate working

For somebody else especially. I've been pretty successful at getting by without a job. Went for all of 2005 and the last 6 months of this year (2007) without a job. I'm pretty sure that I can do even better next year. I'm going to start with my 2005 goal of $30 a day. This is enough for me to live of off and during the summer can be alot of fun.

I'm going to create more adult websites, if I'm getting my figures right, I should be able to see $2-3,000 a month from various adult sites I know and am learning to build. If I'm able to keep the money I have in the stock market in the stock market that should give me atleast $100 in dividends for the year, though I plan on selling that stock and moving the money to something more attractive with better potential. I'm also going to be exploring regular affiliate advertising and blogging 2-3 hours a day for extra money and traffic to various sites.

Don't worry I plan on breaking both legs on this one!
